George Washington’s Breakfast

February 28, 2012 Leave a comment

Today the children and I read the book, George Washington’s breakfast.  In this book, a little boy named George Allen was very interested in everything about George Washington, even what he ate for breakfast.  After much research, he discovered that Washington ate three hoecakes and drank three glasses of tea.  Today the children and I enjoyed eating George Washington’s breakfast.  Instead of drinking tea, we drank apple juice.  The children liked them so much that they wanted the recipe.  It was simply Marthe White cornbread mix cooked on a griddle.

Week of February 27 – March 2

February 27, 2012 Leave a comment

This week we are finishing up some skills from last week and celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday. We will not be reading a story from the anthology. The children may bring in their Dr. Seuss books from home to share with the class.  They also are choosing their own spelling lists by selecting a word that rhymes with a word commonly used in Dr. Seuss’s books.  Your child should be bringing home a paper explaining this on Monday.  Friday is going to be the last day to test on AR books this 9-weeks so we will be ready to celebrate next week. Encourage your child to bring home his/her library books to read at night, as they will not be having reading homework every night. Also, don’t forget “Family Treasure” reading project is due next week.

In math, we are continuing to work with identifying and counting coins.  Please take a few minutes to practice this with your child. I will be testing the students individually on this next week.

Parent conferences are scheduled for next Tuesday (No school for the students.) If you are interested in meeting with me but have not returned your preferred time, please do so asap.

Math – Counting Money

February 22, 2012 Leave a comment

We are learning to identify coins, pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, and to count various amounts using such coins. Please find time to practice counting money at home as this can be a very difficult skill for some students. Thanks for sending in the bags of coins for your child to use for practice.
